Description
West Coast Indigenous art is characterized by several fundamental shapes that form the basis of their distinctive designs.
These shapes include:
Ovoid: An elongated, curved rectangle with flattened bottom, often used for heads, bodies, or joints.
U shape: Resembles the letter “U” with tapered legs, used for various elements like cheeks, scales, or feathers.
S shape: A thick, curved line resembling the letter “S”, used in elements like fish scales and sea mammals.
Circle and Oval: A rounded shape.
Crescent: A curved shape, often used in eyes and joints.
Trigon: A triangular shape with many uses including limbs of animals.
These shapes are combined and modified to create complex designs representing animals, spiritual beings, and natural elements. The ovoid and U shape are particularly crucial in formline art, which is prevalent in Northwest Coast designs.
