“Being a Cree woman from Treaty 10 Territory, it is important for me and my people to carry on our traditions including our long lost art. On a whim I thought I’ll try that also thinking I would fail. But, this tree of life didn’t fail me and I had a new found love in a new to me art form. For hundreds of years my ancestors have been biting on bark to tell stories, express themselves, pass on messages and to share their art. My work with the layers of bark are like pages in a book – they tell me story.”
Kari Lentowicz is a member of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation and resides in Northeastern Saskatchewan in the community of Denare Beach, Saskatchewan. Her roots stem from the Merasty family in Pelican Narrows and from the Montgrand family in Turnor Lake.
